See the Sustainable Home in Luton
I understand from Katarzyna Wysocka, at Luton Borough Council that the University of Bedfordshire are already aware of the Luton Rising and LBC project to retrofit a council home and transform it into a low energy property in Luton. I am delighted to confirm that this property is now open for visitors and I would like to invite you, and groups from the University of Bedfordshire, to visit.
This is a project Luton Rising and LBC have been working on over the summer and autumn, and the home is now open to visits from groups and the general public, until the 15th December. The aim of the project was to fully retrofit a council home with energy saving and renewable energy measures, and then open the home to showcase these working. Ultimately the aim is to encourage people to make energy saving changes in their own homes. We are also exploring the possibility of the energy savings being used as verified carbon credits available to be used by local companies. At the home we have ensured the insulation is high, retrofitted triple glazing and composite doors, removed the gas boiler and replaced with an air source heat pump for heating and hot water, installed smart heating controls, installed solar panels and a battery energy storage system, and installed LED lighting.
We have also added composting facilities. Visitors will be able to see the improvements and the new technologies which have been installed, and get advice about what would work in their own homes. The home will be re-let once this open home period is complete. We would be delighted if you, and other people from the University of Bedfordshire wished to visit.
More information about the property can be found here, 47 Abbots Wood Road retrofit home - https://lutonrising.org.uk/retrofit/ the most recent press release is here - https://lutonrising.org.uk/lutons-new-low-carbon-retrofit-home-open-for-visits/
People can book either through the web page, or come back to my colleague Iffat Kamali with a date that works for them. We would also be delighted if this information were shared more widely with students and the University of Bedfordshire Community, who may wish to visit the project.
