Luton Borough Council said:
We know people have strong views about Luton Town Centre and residents and businesses now have a chance to help shape how we can change it.
Consultation on issues, opportunities and emerging ideas for an improved town centre starts today.
Luton Council is preparing a vision and masterplan which will guide how the town centre will change in the short, medium and long term and is asking for views from people on some of the current issues and the early thinking around key priorities, including:
The scheme is a key part of the town’s recovery from Covid-19 by working with existing and new partners to secure investment to support new jobs, opportunities and economic growth.
The vision and master plan will also set out how we can improve public spaces, take care of our heritage, provide new and affordable activities and be a welcoming place for everyone to enjoy.
Cllr Sian Timoney, Deputy Leader of Luton Council, said: “With changes in shopping habits, we desperately need to reimagine our town centre and make it a welcoming, cleaner, greener, accessible area that local people are proud to call their own. And also using opportunities for more outdoor areas for when we come out of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is absolutely right that we do all of this in partnership with residents and our business communities.
“This scheme is not only a key part of the town’s economic recovery from Covid-19, but also presents a much needed glimmer of light in what has been a really dark period for the people of this town.
“Issues about the town centre are always brought up by residents. Many say they don’t even visit the area anymore which makes us even more determined to radically rethink, reimagine and excite people on what is possible.”

A second consultation will take place later in the year with worked up proposals once the feedback has been reviewed analysed and incorporated.
