Mitigation Support
Mitigating Circumstances
If a student experiences exceptional unforeseen short term circumstances that are outside of their control which impact their ability submit their work by the original submission date or sit an examination they should be advised that they can apply apply for support from Mitigation.
The only teams who can grant mitigating circumstances awards are the Student Engagement and Mitigation Teams in Student Support, academic staff cannot give permission.
All mitigation is awarded in accordance with the Academic Regulations and the Mitigation Policy
Students should complete this Mitigation Circumstance Application Form [DOCX] and send it to mitigation@beds.ac.uk and a member of staff will review the application appropriately.
Staff Advice/Tips
- Students must meet the criteria of the circumstances to be considered for mitigation, Please advise them to check the Mitigating Circumstances Criteria [PDF] for eligibility criteria. If they are unsure if their grounds are valid please encourage them to attend a mitigation drop in session which can be found on our main webpage - Mitigation
- All applications should be made prior to or on the submission day. Retrospective applications can be accepted up to and including 7 days later than their assessment deadline.
- Mitigation decisions: An “Extension” or “Mitigated Resit opportunity”.
- Extensions are either: 7 days for self certification – no evidence provided but meets the specific criteria for self certification or up to 14 days (or up to 56 days for dissertation) – acceptable evidence provided and meets the specific criteria.
- Self certification: students can be given mitigation on self certification basis 3 x per academic year, one month apart and cannot apply to self cert the same assessment more than once.
- Mitigated Resit Opportunity: This another opportunity to complete this exam/assessment/piece of work, which is normally a new piece of work. Set by the University at the next scheduled opportunity. May impact progression and/ or graduation delay. Mitigated resit awards give another attempt (If this is a first attempt it remains so, if it is already capped it will remain so too).
- Block Study Students: will be awarded resit opportunity if awarded mitigation and not an extension.
- Mitigation decisions are sent to students email addresses to advise the outcome of their application, students can see any mitigation decisions on eVision under “My Studies” section.
- Submitting Late: It is the students responsibility to advice faculty of any mitigation awards. Academic staff do not need to wait for mitigation teams approval email before setting up a late submission link. They should ensure all students have access to a late links set up for up to 14 days after their initial due date, to enable late submission if they are awarded mitigation. If students submit late and are not awarded mitigation, the work should not be marked.

Academics can view mitigation awards by unit by using the Mark Entry eVision task. If you cannot access the mark entry system or cannot view mitigation awards here please contact the Assessments Team who offer support and training for staff on this system.
All UoB staff should now all have access the Shared Drive folder Student Support 2. This will grant you access to a read only report of all new decisions mitigation makes with a latency of 24hrs. The report is refreshed at 5.30pm every weekday.
A request should be logged on the ICT helpdesk if you cannot access the shared drive.
