Our purpose

We exist to change lives through education. This purpose underpins all aspects of our work and is central to this programme.

The challenge we face

Despite being in a relatively healthy financial position compared to many institutions, we are currently operating at a deficit and facing a significant reduction in income.

Key factors include:

• A reduction in income of approximately £60 million over the past two years
• A decline in on-campus student numbers from 10,500 to under 6,000
• Operating deficit of approximately £19 million last year. The same is predicted for this year

Why action is required now

It’s about making sure that when someone chooses this University, they get a high-quality education, the support they need, and the opportunity to succeed.

We need to close an operating deficit and make sure we’re generating enough to invest in our future.
