The University's Research & Innovation Service helps academics create CPD and short courses for external organisations, and supports organisations to address workforce skills and knowledge gaps. In addition, we offer a set of courses you can undertake to develop your career and skillset.
Short and professional courses come in a variety of forms. They may be credit bearing and are sometimes linked to requirements of a professional body. OfS guidelines help explain what CPD means; we can support you with all of the following:
We offer a 10% staff discount on our short courses.
We can help you develop your ideas to explore and present the business case needed to support a course at the approval stage - for example:
Help with guidance on costing the development stage and the presentation stage of the course. Using internal and external benchmarks as well as bringing market intelligence to bear we will help reach a proposed price. We can then assist you with securing formal approval.
Where necessary, support the steps needed for the University to become an approved provider for a professional body and map out the needs of that body for student assessment, membership and fees.
For more information on the approval process for short courses, see the document AQF Process - short course approval [PDF], as well as the Process Flowchart [PDF].
To propose a new non-credit bearing short course, complete the short course proposal form [PDF] and consult the CPD or Bid Support Teams for information on costings.
Approved new courses are eligible for marketing support to ensure effective promotion and recruitment. Colleagues can request this by completing the Marketing Request Pro-Forma, outlining course information and the required marketing activity.
